Premier's Reading Challenge
The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) aims to encourage in students a love of reading for leisure and pleasure, and to enable students to experience quality literature. Participation helps children develop their reading skills while acknowledging them for their efforts. The 2021 challenge has now commenced at Elermore Vale Public School. All students are encouraged to complete the challenge as a part of their in-class reading activities. Students are not expected to complete the challenge at home, however, any elligible books read at home can still count and can be recorded online on the student's PRC reading log (as of March 1).
Completing the Challenge: Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 need to be exposed to 30 PRC books and may have these read to them; making this very achievable for all students. Children in Years 3 to 6 need to read 20 PRC books to complete the Challenge. These books come from the PRC 3-4 or 5-6 booklists respective of the student's year level. As independent readers, students in these grades must read the books themselves rather than have the book read to them.
For students who have been reading over the holidays, those books already read this year can be counted however must be recorded with the PRC ID or as personal choice books. Students can check the PRC website below to find the ID number of a book from home, if on the list. Students who enjoy books from a series need to remember that only two books from a series can be counted as PRC books. Others will be counted as personal choice books. In choosing books, students may read above their level but cannot read below their level.
The challenge runs until the end of August however it is hoped that our students will complete it by the end of Term 2 or earlier. At the end of the year, the Premier’s Reading Challenge official certificate will be sent to schools to be awarded to successful students and recipients.
For further information on privacy, booklists, challenge rules and the new PRC App, please visit the PRC website at:

Principal's Reading Challenge
This year we will also be running a Principal's Reading Challenge. This challenge is for nights' reading acumulated and is based on just 10 minutes sustained reading per night. This can include any reading at home and outside of school hours and includes home-readers, library books, students' own books, e-books, newspapers, magazines, read-a-long story books, etc. It does not, however, include audio books or other non-print forms of reading.
To qualify, simply initial their card to verify for every day they read for 10 minutes outside of school hours. Students should show their card to their teacher for at least every 10 new nights of reading. Students will be recognised at various levels of their reading progress starting with a certificate for 25 nights of home reading.
Scholastic Bookclub
A Bookclub catalogue is sent home via the students twice a term. Books can be ordered online as explained below.
Orders are delivered to the school and then sent home via the students. Purchases can be made for as little as a dollar. The school is given scholastic rewards for every purchase which allows us to order more books for the school library.
